President Obama Visits College Station, A&M Campus
President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit College Station on Friday, October 16, 2009.
He will be visiting the campus to honor former President George H.W. Bush and the 20th anniversary of Bush's "1000 Points Of Light" program.
The Points Of Light Institute is calling the event a Presidential Forum On Service. It's being hosted at Rudder Auditorium at Texas A&M. The event is invitation only.
Here are some additional details from The Eagle in College Station:
Organizers said its purpose was to stress the importance of community service, like the program Obama created over the summer, but mainly George H.W. Bush's Points of Light program started 20 years ago during his first year as president.
Bush's program has recognized more than 4,500 individuals for their efforts in volunteering and helping a community. Obama's 2 1/2-month service program ended Friday to mark the eight-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and was developed by the families of those who died in the attacks. Projects ranged from food drives and home repairs to neighborhood cleanups and disaster preparation activities.
College Station's unique offering of a presidential library -- there are 13 in the country -- has drawn big-name politicians from around the globe and across the political aisle. It was less than a year ago that then-President George W. Bush came to the Texas A&M campus to give a December graduation convocation address.
In 2007, The Points of Light Foundation and HandsOn Network merge to become Points of Light Institute, creating the largest volunteer management and civic engagement organization in the nation.
The Points Of Light Foundation was "born" from the idea President Bush outlined in his 1989 Inaugural Address:
I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good. We will work hand in hand, encouraging, sometimes leading, sometimes being led, rewarding. We will work on this in the White House, in the Cabinet agencies. I will go to the people and the programs that are the brighter points of light, and I will ask every member of my government to become involved. The old ideas are new again because they are not old, they are timeless: duty, sacrifice, commitment, and a patriotism that finds its expression in taking part and pitching in.
I have spoken with both the White House and with representatives from former President Bush's staff and this promises to be a special event. We will be there for the festivities and will report live from College Station on Friday.
Look for more updates later in the week.

Great article, I think you covered everything there. . . I would say freelancing is quite hard especially if you are not used to working on your own, can be quite hard to motivate yourself also. . . we all know what it is like to stare at the monitor.

President Bush and President Obama,
Thank you both for stressing the importance of community service and reaching out and helping those in need. We all need to work together and help our neighbors.
